It was the challenge of capturing the movement of the dancer and the flow of her shawl that inspired me to create this piece. I opted for a minimalist, contemporary approach to the figure, which focuses our attention on the movement of the piece, from whichever angle it is viewed.
The modern American Indian Pow Wow competition dance, the Ladies Fancy Shawl Dance, may have its roots in the Butterfly Dance. One legend has it that a butterfly lost her mate and, in her grief, took off her beautiful wings. After a long journey, her sorrow was eventually healed. Donning her wings again, she began to dance, celebrating the renewal of her life. The shawl represents the butterfly's wings, the fancy steps and twirls represent the butterfly's style of flight.
This will be one of five dancers in my 'One-Nation' sculpture, the others being Hispanic, African, Asian and European Americans. Each dancer is available separately and explores a different interpretation of beauty, movement, and flow of the dance, but all are united in 'One Nation'. Limited Edition: 3
